Light painting photography

A bunch of years ago … while shooting film … I had an assignment in Lawrence, MA for Freightliner Trucks to visit Coady’s Towing and photograph a heavy wrecker and heavy-duty roll-off carrier. Once I saw the great looking trucks and the total lighting package that had been designed with each, I knew the shot had to be done at night.

At the time, I carried a 500,000 candle power, hand-held spot light. With the camera on a tripod and the shutter open for 30 seconds, I walked around the scene using the light to cover all aspects of the trucks that I wanted to illuminate … in essence, painting the light into the image that was otherwise totally dark except for the lights on the trucks.
