Honor Flight returns to Midway with WWII veterans

Some time ago I found myself returning to Midway Airport on a late flight. As I walked through the terminal, I noticed a bit of commotion around Gate B1 … police officers, firefighters, lots of active and retired military personnel, and a crowd of people. It turns out that they were all awaiting the arrival of one of the Honor Flights that charter a plane full of WWII veterans to Washington, DC for the day so they can visit the WWII Memorial.

I don’t mind telling you that I was tired, and ready for the drive home … but this seemed like something I just couldn’t pull myself away from. After all, I had all my camera equipment with me, so I found a nice corner to drop my bags and scoped out the area to find the shots that I was going to want to get.

Well, the plane arrived and a group of pipers led the veterans down through a gauntlet of sailers from Great Lakes. Many of the veterans were in wheel chairs, and there was a separate line of sailers for the sole purpose of assisting with the wheel chairs.
