Reflection of a winter sunrise

While returning from an overnight fire, I found myself in a position to stop and capture a beautiful reflection of a winter sunrise at the Skokie Lagoons just outside of Winnetka (IL). I was tired, cold, and ready to go home to begin editing the fire scene photos. Conditions though were ideal to hang out for a short while hoping for a beautiful scene.

I was rewarded with a dramatic sunrise amplified by a glass-like reflection in the water.

This image was created through an HDR merger of three separate exposures to compensate for the extreme dynamic range of the subject. Larry Shapiro photo

Due to the wide dynamic range of values from the darkest shadows to the brightness of the rising sun, I used a 1-stop variation in a 5-stop range to insure I had all the information that was necessary to combine into one, full-range file.
